This thesis is about Cover illustrations of DVD movies as examples of visual communication. I have studied the Cover illustrations of the three movies Gran Torino, Secret Window and As White As Snow. My research assignment has been to find out how the Cover illustrations of DVD movies communicate in relation to the story. I have also been looking for what makes a Cover illustration interesting and if the interest in itself is individually considered or if there are certain general rules regardless of the observer.To reach a conclusion I have been studying components in advertising pictures, visual communication and how the commercial producers use advertising to communicate with the observer. Semiotics, advertising and comparisons between the Cover illustrations have been my method for analyze.I have come to the conclusion that Cover illustrations are meticulously produced, and that every single part of them is important for the observers? over all impression and interpretation of the Cover illustration.

It is not about the perfect tune or pretty picture.It is always, always about the story. (Is or ought to be)When we release a new album, publish a book or show a brand newcollection of clothes or furniture etc. it is (or ought to be) because we havesomething to say (tell/share). The choice of language, in which we tell our stories,is vital for how they will be perceived.This is where illustration comes in. Illustration is a tool for storytelling, for contributingto the world in the most legible way.Illustration is legibility, it is the italic, the underline, the ?quotation mark?, the exclamation mark!It is not about the pretty picture.I want to talk about this.

During consultation procedures between forest owners and the Sámi, data on, e.g., reindeer lichen biomass on the current site is needed. Hitherto, the existing methods of measuring lichen cover and biomass has been either objective methods such as the Point Intercept method, which is time consuming, or some sort of subjective visual estimation, which is faster but less accurate. However, both these methods are sensitive to different observers and/or to different inventories. This paper addresses the further development and evaluation of a photographical inventory method that uses colour distribution in images to estimate lichen biomass. During the autumn of 2011 six different locations, with different grazing pressure and lichen cover, in Norrbotten county were inventoried using both the Point Intercept method and the photographical method, complemented with collection of biomass samples.

Informationskampanj om säker sexDetta examensarbete handlar om en informationskampanj för säker sex, inriktad mot ungdomar i åldrarna 16-23. Rapporten består av undersökningar kring varför och hur ungdomar kan informeras om säker sex. Undersökningarna ligger till grund för utförandet av kampanjen. Informationskampanjen har som syfte, att med hjälp av illustrationer och text, förbättra ungdomars attityd till säker sex. Det finns ett behov av mer information då diagnostiseringen av veneriska sjukdomar har ökat varje år sedan 1994..

This project has been about illustration, text and format with illustration as the main communication path.A study has been made of how these three elements interact, particularly how text and format affect the illustrations. The goal has been to create an illustrated story in a form of a book. The story is about the feeling of being alienated from other people and invites the reader to make their own interpretations. The main target audience has been the ones who is interested in illustration and storytelling, no matter of age.Colors has been inspired from animated movies and the natur. Various textures such as wood, fabric and metal for example has been scanned to create a rough feeling.

I denna rapport har jag redogjort för hur jag gått tillväga i skapandet av ett illustrerat handledningsmaterial som kan förklara för elever i årskurs 4-9 hur olikablomväxter och deras livscykel ser ut. Uppdraget har varit ett samarbete mellan mig och Uppsala botaniska trädgård. Detta handledningsmaterial som skapats ska användas av lärare eller handledare under studiedagar på Uppsala botaniska trädgård i undervisning om blomväxter. Informationen i arbetsmaterialet innefattar hur blomväxters livscykel kan se ut, hur blommor kan sprida sina frön och hur blommor pollineras.För att komma fram till hur dessa kretslopp och företeelser kan illustreras för att visa den väsentliga informationen har jag använt mig av teorier inom informationsdesign. En omvärldsanalys och målgruppsanalys har också genomförts för att undersöka hur liknande material kan se ut, och vilka förutsättningar målgruppen har för att ta till sig informationen..

En ny sportbil håller på att tas fram, men bilen är fortfarande bara i ritningsstadiet. Biltillverkaren behöver informationsmaterial i form av en teknisk illustration. Arbetet går ut på att skapa en teknisk illustrationen som informerar målgruppen om bilens avancerade teknik och visar hur det slutgiltiga resultatet av bilen kommer att se ut.Mitt arbete fokuserar i huvudsak på två delar av informationsdesign, kommunikation och estetik. Illustrationen ska tydligt kommunicera information om bilens teknik till betraktaren samt vara estetiskt tilltalande för att behålla betraktarens intresse samt tydligt visa rätt materialkänslor i bilens olika material.Eftersom bilen fortfarande är i ritningsstadiet har ingen tillgång till en verklig bil att studera och fotografera funnits. Stora delar av projektet har gått ut på att söka efter andra typer av referensmaterial för att kunna skapa illustrationen..

A picture says more than thousand words - an analysis of GQ Magazine´s cover images and ninth grade student´s views of them is an essay in media and communication studies covering 15 hp. This essay examines how men and women are depicted on the cover of GQ Magazine and how ninth grade students perceive these images. Our research questions are: How is gender presented in cover images? How do the students interpret these images? What possible differencies or similarities are there? Our theoretical framework is based on gender theory. Methods used are a survey conducted at Tegs Central school and a semiotic analysis of the cover images.

The reason for, and objective of, this project has been to research the relation between abstract and figurative illustration and how, if at all possible, one can bring them together and make them act as a whole.As a starting point for this project I used fragments from texts I?ve written during the past years. The texts deal with the thoughts and emotions that describe the state of melancholy or mania, two psychological conditions that are widely spread in our society. By illustrating these text passages in pencil drawings I?ve been given the possibility to investigate how to combine figurative illustration with the abstract alike.

Genom kvalitativa intervjuer med en klasslärare, en speciallärare samt fyra elever har syftet med denna studie varit att undersöka på vilket sätt skapande i bild och illustration till text kan verka som stöd och motivation i språkliga lärprocesser samt om elevernas uppfattningar skiljer sig åt på grund av deras olika språkförmågor. Ambitionen har också varit att synliggöra goda inlärningsstrategier med skapande i bild och illustration som verktyg samt på vilket sätt dessa strategier kan utveckla den språkliga förmågan hos eleven med dyslexi. Elever med dyslexi är i behov av multisensoriska lärprocesser för gynnsam språkutveckling. Det framkommer i studien att pedagogerna tycker det är betydelsefullt att eleverna använder sig av skapande i bild och illustration för att komma åt sin metakognition. Även eleverna upplever detta viktigt, särskilt eleven med dyslexi.

This project is a study in how to represent the Swedish magician and variety artist Carl-Einar Häckner in a web-based environment. With a starting point focusing on illustration I wanted to produce a web environment that would function as a prototype for a webpage. My personal aim was to explore and gain new experiences from working in a digital interactive environment. I wanted to use animation and illustration to create an atmosphere and communicate emotions, and in the end find out a way of how to integrate that with a more text based content. Cultivation of grapevine is novel under Scandinavian conditions. We studied the impact of ground cover on frost hardiness of grapevine cultivars in Northwestern Scania in a two-factorial trial with four cultivars Solaris, Pinot Gris, Siegerrebe, Ortega and three kinds of ground cover (open soil, plastic cover and gravel). The study was conducted in a grapevine orchard, planted in May 2009, in Broddarp on Bjärepenisula Sweden (N latitude 56°; longitude E 12°). Soil and air temperature were monitored continuously. Frost hardiness measurements were performed every second week from late September to early December 2009. Frost resistance, LT50, was determined by electrolyte leakage measurement of the upper stems after artificial freezing at -15 °C.

Hard competition amongst the editorial world of magazines today has led to increased differentiation of the content as well as the visual communication. In this study, the graphic elements of the magazine cover was analyzed to establish how the magazines character is being conveyed by the cover design. In a case study the covers of the Swedish publications of fashion magazine BON and ELLE was semantically analyzed.The conclusion was made that the logotype plays the biggest part in conveying the magazine?s character. Secondly, the front cover headlines shape and size matter a great deal for the overall impression.

As my final project I planned to animate a movie. Usually I work with illustration and I see animation as the next step in my design work, to investigate how illustration and movement can collaborate. The purpose with my project was to develop my technical skills, improve my design process and broaden my work to eventually be able to work with animation. My ambition was to make an abstract animation and my focus was mainly on my personal process and knowledge. Flygfänas skog is a project where illustration meets spatiality. The work is about how section 62of the Children and Youth Hospital (BUS), at Skåne University Hospital, in Lund can useillustration as a compliment to their premises. Today, the hospital has difficulties to deal with theolder children patients at the hospital in a good way because the expression that is there today,mostly only appeals to the younger patients. Previously, there has been some kind of decorationon the department and the staff thought that this is boring, is a problem in that in many placesthere are stickers of child characters posted on the walls. This and other installations that cut outletters, face off, and symbols have made sense in the department becomes fragmented, ill andchildish.
